Child Therapy is for 5 to 17 year olds. If you are seeking help and are older than this then please look at the adult therapy page of my website.
Having a child who is experiencing difficulties can be a really tough place to be. It can often leave us feeling powerless or just unsure how to help. You may feel as though you’ve done everything you can but have reached a ‘stuck’ point. Or, you may be at the very beginning of your journey and have no clue where to even begin in helping your child.
Therapy provides a space for your child to work through what’s troubling them. Like with adults, children and young people often find it easier to talk to someone who isn’t a friend or family member.
Often a child/ young person may not know what to say, or perhaps how to talk about their feelings. They may be coping with their difficulties using strategies that are harmful or withdrawing from loved ones. It may be that they are struggling in school, experiencing anxiety or depression. Your child may be experiencing mild difficulties or more severe. These are all issues I regularly work with and can help support.
At present sessions are all remote and therefore are only suitable for 11+. Occasionally slightly younger children work well with remote work. If you are unsure please get in touch and we can discuss it further.
I have decided that therapy might be helpful for my child… now what?
I have had families contact me who have spoken with their child about them starting therapy and some who have not. The first thing I would say is, please do just get in touch. This is something we can talk through.
Initial Consultation
This is a 15 minute discussion to briefly meet, get an idea as to whether therapy might be the right course for your child and to answer any initial questions.
Assessment (Parent)
Once we have made contact and we have had our initial consultation , you as parent or guardian will have an 50 minute remote assessment with myself. This allows me to get a better understanding of what is going on for your child. It also allows you to meet me. I feel this is so important as I’ll be working closely with your child and it’s important you feel comfortable. You will also have an opportunity to ask any further questions you may have about the therapy process.
Assessment (Child)
Assessments take place remotely between myself and your child. This 50 minute session allows me to gather whether or not therapy is the right course, assess any risks and get a sense of how I may be able to help your child.
Once these first two assessments are complete we can then move forward with the therapy process. This is a weekly session of 50 minutes.
Reviews
Reviews are generally put in every 6 weeks. These allow you as the parent/ guardian; myself and on occasion your child to review where we are in the process.
How I work
During my years in practice I have found that children/young people (and adults!) often just don’t have the words to fully express their distress. We often experience unpleasant, or sometimes unbearable, feelings that we simply cannot find reason for, be able to find a way out, or explain.
Sessions provide a space to unpack and process what is going on. The space is confidential and explores new ways of coping and making sense of their experience.
One of the many interesting and surprising experiences of the beginner in child analysis is to find in even very young children a capacity for insight which is often far greater than that of adults.
